The EPA maps every county in southern Colorado as Zone 1, meaning the average indoor screening level is expected to exceed 4.0 pCi/L, and the state health department estimates roughly half of Colorado homes test above that action level. We've measured 2.1 in Bessemer and 26.4 off Liberty Point in the same month. There is no way to know your number without a test.
The Pueblo Department of Public Health & Environment hands out free charcoal test kits every January for National Radon Action Month. Grab one, we mean it. And if the result comes back at 4.0 or higher, that's where we come in.
This is the core of what we do: active sub-slab depressurization. A suction point cored through your slab, schedule-40 PVC run through the garage or a closet chase, a quiet inline fan in the attic or outside, and a discharge above the roofline where the radon dilutes to nothing. A u-tube manometer on the pipe tells you at a glance that the system is pulling.
A typical Pueblo ranch takes us about half a day. Tight mid-century basements on the Northside take longer, and we'll tell you that up front instead of surprising you at noon. Every install includes sealing the obvious entry routes, a labeled system, and a free 48-hour retest once the dust settles.
Hardware-store kits are fine, and the county's free January kits are better than not testing at all. A dirt crawl space is basically a radon delivery system with a house on top. Sub-slab suction doesn't work when there's no slab, so we seal the floor with a heavy reinforced membrane, lap and tape the seams, seal it to the stem walls, and pull suction from under the plastic. Same physics, more crawling.
Half the older homes out toward Beulah and Rye sit on crawl spaces, and plenty of St. Charles Mesa farmhouses do too. It's dirty work and we're good at it. Marcus has a dedicated set of coveralls he refuses to let us wash the luck out of.
Radon fans die quietly. The manometer drops to zero, nobody looks at it for a year, and the house drifts right back to its old levels. If your u-tube is reading level, your fan is humming louder than it used to, or your system is past its tenth birthday, have us look at it.

Winter, almost always. Closed windows, the furnace running, and the stack effect pulling soil gas up through the slab all push indoor levels up. A house that tests 3.8 in July can easily test 7 or 8 in January. That's why we recommend winter testing if you can, and it's why the county gives its free kits out in January.
Radon doesn't respect property lines but it doesn't spread evenly either. Soil composition, how your slab was poured, where the cracks are, your sump pit, even how your HVAC balances all change what gets pulled inside.
