When a furnace dies, you notice in an hour. When a radon fan dies, you notice never, unless you glance at a little u-tube of colored fluid most homeowners forgot they had. Meanwhile the house drifts back to whatever it measured before the system went in. If you bought a home that came with a mitigation system, walk over and look at the gauge today. Fan swaps are quick. We kill power, cut the couplings, mount the new unit on fresh rubber fittings so it runs quiet, and verify vacuum on the manometer before we leave. We keep RadonAway RP145s and RP265s stocked in the van, plus a Fantech for the odd oversized crawl space system, so most calls are one visit.
Not every problem is the fan, though, and we don't sell you one if it isn't. Things we find on diagnostic calls: ice-blocked discharge pipes after a cold snap, suction pits that silted up, condensation pooling in a sagging horizontal run, couplings cracked by sun, and our recurring favorite, discharges terminated under the eave so the exhaust curls back into the attic soffit. That last one we've re-piped so many times we should send the original installers a fruit basket.
Systems older than 10 years get a frank assessment: sometimes a $30 coupling buys you three more years, sometimes the fan is on borrowed time and you'd rather replace it on your schedule than discover it failed sometime last winter. Pair a swap with a $135 retest and you'll know the whole system is doing its job, not just spinning.
Look at the u-tube manometer on the pipe. If both columns of fluid are level, the fan isn't pulling. Also: a working fan makes a soft steady hum, and a dying one often rattles or cycles. No gauge movement, no hum, dead fan.
Ten years is a fair average; we see plenty die at 7 and a few soldier past 15. They run 24/7/365, so a decade is roughly 87,000 hours of service. When yours quits, that's not a defect, that's a full life.

If the swap is like-for-like and the manometer returns to its old reading, a retest is optional but smart. We include a discounted retest with every replacement, and if we changed fan size or fixed other problems, we push harder for it.
